Three Linden men remanded to jail over alleged arson at GECOM Wismar Office

Hours after the Police announced their arrest, three Linden men were today charged and remanded to jail for setting fire to the Guyana Elections Commission Wismar building back in July 2020.

The three 21-year-old, Marlon Hunter, 48-year-old Bryon Kendal and 23-year-old Teon February appeared this afternoon before Magistrate Wanda Fortune in the Linden Magistrates’ Court and were not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.

They are accused of setting fire to the GECOM Wismar office building on the 14th of July 2020.

Attorney Yondessa Mercurius in an application for bail for the 21-year-old accused Marlon Hunter argued in the Court that her client was never convicted for any crime other than breaching the Covid-19 measure.

She said the offence of arson is a bailable offence and her client poses no threat and has been cooperating with the Police. But the Police Prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that the building was an important one with public records which were destroyed in the fire.

After listening to the arguments, the Magistrate remanded all three of the accused to jail until the 30th July when the matter continues.

In a statement last evening, the Police said the three men were arrested after one of them confessed to the crime and claimed that two of them were paid $150,000 to set blaze to the GECOM building.

The third accused was named as the person who allegedly made the payment. He is accused of also providing the gasolene which was used, according to the Police, to start the fire.

The Police also claimed that when the fire started, there was an explosion that resulted in the two suspected arsonists being burnt to their feet.

The matter remains under probe.
