Two Welfare Officers suspended over dragging of schoolgirl at market square

Two Welfare Officers attached to the Child Care and Protection Agency have been suspended from their job after they were caught on camera dragging a school girl on the road. One of the officers could be seen dragging the girl by her hair while the other was pulling her by one of her arms.

Minister of Human Services, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, described the actions of the welfare officers as “appalling”.

The Minister announced that the two officer were suspended with immediate effect and Police investigators have also been called in to take action.

The Minister said the two welfare officers will be held accountable for their conduct which runs counter to the values and operational procedures of the Child Care and Protection Agency.

In a video clip posted online, the mother of the school girl made it clear that she will get justice for her child, even as she refuted claims that her daughter was “liming” at the bus park.

“My child was never liming in town,” the woman said. The child was reportedly waiting on transportation when she was dragged away from the park by the two welfare officers.

The incident comes even as former Director of the Child Care and Protection Agency, Ann Greene has raised concerns about the proper functioning of the Agency, and the lack of training for Child Protection Officers.

Greene, in this regard has called for serious intervention at the level of the Probation and Social Services Department and Childcare and Protection Agency.
