Visitors will no longer be allowed to go to Kaieteur’s edge

The Ministry of Tourism has announced that a decision has been taken to no long allow visitors to the Kaieteur Falls to go to the viewing point at the edge of the waterfalls.

The decision was taken in light of Saturday’s suicide by a 21-year-old young woman who jumped to hear death from the edge of the falls.

Additionally, the Tourism Ministry has also made a decision to add restrictions to a number of viewing points at the falls.

Today, a team from the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force are expected to head back to the area in an attempt to locate the body of Roshinee Pagwah who leaped to her death over the falls.

The young woman’s body was initially spotted at the bottom of the waterfalls on Saturday moments after she ran and jumped over, but the body eventually vanished beneath the tumbling water from the falls.

The Ministry of Tourism  said the pool at the base of the Falls is being monitored for signs of the body, while preparations have commenced to secure and extract the body, once it becomes visible.

“This operation will be led by Special Forces of the Guyana Defence Force, due to the dangerous and extremely rugged terrain below the Falls”, the Ministry noted.

The young woman who hails from Berbice was walking back to the aircraft with a group of tourist, when she made a sudden dash from the crown and jumped over the edge of the waterfalls despite the efforts of the tour guides and park rangers who raced after her.

Her family members are still stunned over the incident since they were all unaware that she even had a trip planned to the Kaieteur falls.

Persons on the trip said the young woman showed no signs that would have triggered an alarm. She even posed for photographs a few moments before she decided to jump.

The day before she committed suicide, young woman took to Instagram to express a sad feeling that she was experiencing.

She became the third woman to jump over the falls. Just in September, another woman leapt to her death while back in 2009, a young lady died by the same method.

Guyana has one of the highest suicide rates in this part of the world.
