WPA pulls out of APNU but leaves door open for return

Upset that it may not have been consulted on which one of its nominees would have been chosen for Parliament and a seat on the regional council, WPA Secretary Tacuma Ogunseye announced that the party was withdrawing from A Partnership for National Unity.

The WPA is also calling for the withdrawal of the names of its two members that have already been submitted to the Elections Commission to serve in Parliament and the Regional Council.

In a letter to the Chairman of A Partnership for National Unity, the WPA said it had to learn of the selections for Parliament and the Council through the local press.

The party recalled that it has had cause on several occasions to draw attention to the practice of non-consultation within the APNU.

It said it cannot be denied that the behaviour of the PNCR leadership in the latest episode has left a lot to be desired.

According to the party, “decisions affecting the APNU have been made and continue to be made in the name of the constituent parties without consultations and that makes it appear as if the smaller parties have to live with decisions being handed down by the major party, the People’s National Congress.

The statement added that the decision not to consult the WPA on the final choice for the two nominees may be a precursor of what is to come.

The party said it is also concerned about the non-allocation of seats to two of the other small parties that make up the APNU.

The statement made it clear that the WPA remains open to coalition politics and will therefore leave the door open for conciliation.

The WPA’s Chairperson, Tabita Sarabo-Halley was selected by the Head of the coalition’s list, David Granger as the person who would be taking up the seat for the party in Parliament. He said she worked throughout the campaign across the country.

Sarabo-Halley was nominated by the WPA among other members for a Parliamentary seat.

In a recent interview, Mr. Granger was high in praise for Ms. Sarabo-Halley who is said is one of the rising stars in the coalition that he believes will do a good job in the national assembly.

He said all of the parties made nominations for the National Assembly and the Councils.
