Granger and Harmon visit mourning relatives of Berbice teens and demand justice

Former President David Granger joined Opposition Leader Joe Harmon in a visit to #3 village West Berbice this morning, where they met and spoke with the grieving relatives of the two teenagers who were brutally murdered in the Cotton Tree backdam.

During a meeting with the mothers of the two young men and other family members, former President Granger said there must be justice for cousins, Isiah and Joel Henry.

He said he understands the hurt being felt by the families and the communities where the teens lived, adding that the Police must be protective of all of the people of Guyana and people must be able to walk freely in any part of the country.

“This is the worst case of not protecting our citizens, and I ask you to continue to give support to the families and continue to bring pressure against this government to make sure there is no repetition and no recurrence of this crime. And all citizens must be able to live in peace”, Mr. Granger said.

The mutilated bodies of the two young men were found on Sunday, one day after they were reported missing after venturing into the backdam to pick coconuts. Three persons have already been arrested by the Police as part of the murder probe.

Opposition Leader Joe Harmon said there may be the need for an independent investigation into the incident in addition to the probe by the Police.

In a statement, Mr. Harmon said Guyana has lost two young enterprising boys just on the cusp of adulthood and the families and the community have lost their sons and brothers.

“This is an unspeakable crime that has left the nation outraged and in a state of shock. The tears and emotions which I have seen in the past 24 hours from all segments of our society speak to the inhumane and barbaric nature of these crime which has shaken the soul of this country”, Harmon said.

He said the country should observe two days of mourning for the loss of these two young men, Joel and Isaiah Henry on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mr. Harmon said the coalition will continue to call for justice to be served in the matter. The APNU+AFC has also indicated that it will cover all of the funeral expenses of the two teens.
