Acting Police Commissioner Leroy Brumell is to be confirmed in the position. Opposition Leader David Granger met with the President on Brummel’s confirmation and Granger did not oppose the move. Under the laws of Guyana, the President and the Opposition Leader would have to consult and agree on certain key appointments.
Leroy Brumell has been acting as the Police Commissioner since Henry Greene was forced to step down from office in the height of rape allegations. Greene later died in a vehicular accident.
Brumell’s confirmation is coming at a time when there are moves to introduce a SWAT team for the police Force to tackle the ongoing crime problem in the country.
The Acting Commissioner has been very outspoken about the need for citizens to do more to aid in their own security. He has called on citizens to protect themselves and family and has chided license firearm holders about turning a blind eye to the crime situation.
