A 25-year-old Charlestown man who was shot to the chest just over a week ago by a thief who snatched his chain, passed away at the Georgetown Hospital this morning as family members prayed for his full recovery.
The youth, Gregory Garraway, had undergone surgery but remained in a critical condition. Family members were hoping that he would have been able to pull through from the injury but early this morning, they received the devastating news that he had passed away.
Writing on her Facebook page, his sister Tiffany Garraway said she was devastated by the loss.
“I’m hurt, I’m lost, I’m so angry a part of me is missing now I will miss you dearly I know I won’t be able to call you or yell at you or even represent you anymore but you will forever live in my heart I will always love you and I will look over our other siblings it’s hard so hard bye my loving brother”, she wrote.
The young man who worked at Nigel’s Supermarket, was on his way home with a younger brother nine days ago, when they stopped just outside a Mandela Avenue hangout spot.
Garraway was reportedly making his way across the road to make a purchase when he was accosted by a man who grabbed his chain and fired a shot at him while making his escape. The stunned Gregory Garraway fell to the ground and was rushed to the hospital as the armed robber made his escape.
The gunman was never apprehended and Garraway never fully recovered from the gunshot wound.
Relatives have described him as quiet and caring and remember him as always looking out for his young siblings and other relatives.
Family members are hoping for justice and Police investigators are asking for the public’s help as they continue to gather information about the incident. They are hoping that someone may have been able to identify the gunman. Investigations are ongoing.
