Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Omar Khan, confirmed today that the Board of Inquiry that was set up to probe the shooting death of a soldier by one of his own colleagues at the army’s Timehri base, has been completed.
In responding to questions from News Source on Friday, Brigadier Khan said a number of recommendations were made in the report of the Board of Inquiry and those recommendations are being examined with a plan of implementation.
“That report has been submitted and there is a series of recommendations that we are going through”, he said.
On the morning of the 12th June, GDF Private Tevon Daymon was shot dead at the Timehri base, by one of his colleagues, who was handed over to the Police and later charged for murder.
The two privates were known to each other and had gotten into a confrontation that led to a fight and the eventual shooting death.
The incident rattled the military base and the top brass of the Guyana Defence Force. There were concerns raised about the welfare of those ranks who witnessed the shooting incident and were colleagues of both the dead private and his assailant.
The Chief of Staff said those issues are always addressed by the military, though he did not provide specifics on whether psychological assessments were done in wake of the incident.
“The Force as a Force will have to review what happened and certainly worked towards prevention of any similar incident”, he said.
During the same month of June, an off-duty Officer of the GDF was shot dead by armed robber while he moonlighted as a taxi driver. That incident raised the issue about whether officers of the Force are being properly paid to prevent them from seeking outside jobs. Last year, the Government adjusted the salaries for several ordinary ranks of the military, but the salaries for officers remained the same.
