Over $6 Billion paid out in $100,000 Cash Grant since last week

Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh, has announced that over 62,000 persons have already benefited from the Government’s $100,000 cash grant payout since it was launched last week, with thousands more set the receive the grant this week, while others are completing their online registration using the portal.

In providing an update on the cash grant distribution, the Finance Minister said thousands of persons continue to register using the portal and those grants are being processed daily.

“As a result of the processing of the initial 48,858 persons and the additional 13,168 persons a total 62,026 would have had their cash grants processed directly to their bank accounts. This of course results in a total of $6.2 Billion being delivered to citizens of Guyana, without any of these citizens having had to leave their homes or join a line,” the finance minister said.

The Minister acknowledged that scores of persons have been experiencing difficulties in using the online portal, but he said the Government is also working to simplify the online process.

“We understand that there have been others who have been trying to do this and have been encountering difficulties and like I said this is part of the learning process for all of us, on the side of the government, the people developing and implementing these platforms and also on the side of citizens who are trying to access these platforms. This is a process and a journey and I want to say to all Guyanese that we will continue to work refine the ease with which the platform is working,” the finance minister noted.

According to Dr. Singh, despite the challenges and successes of the programme so far, the online registration creates an opportunity for citizens to get aligned with the Government’s digital transformation push.

“And the rollout of this cash grant using an online platform and using digital solutions that allow you to apply online and receive your cash grant digitally transferred into your account represents an early step, to building a culture where people apply for things online and receiving their service online and I recognize that this is going to be a learning process for everybody it is going to be a learning process us as we develop and refine them and will be a learning process for our citizens as they become comfortable submitting  digitally and receiving service digitally,” Dr. Singh said.

The Senior Minister responsible for Finance assured that verification and payment processing will continue in successive batches as more applications are completed.
