In her final report as General Secretary of the People’s National Congress, longtime party member Amna Ally encouraged the new team that will emerge as the party’s leadership and its members to put their troubles behind and focus on unifying the party to regain office.
“Our party endured a lot of slippages, hate and discomfort at the run-up to this Congress but I would like to request of you to put these moments behind you, consolidate our gains and take a common position to get the PPP out of office and return our party to power”, Ally told party delegates in her recorded speech to the hybrid Congress.
Looking back at the past year and the 2020 elections which resulted in the PNC-led coalition being ousted from Government, Ally said the elections were not fair and the APNU+AFC Coalition had been cheated out of office.
She said, “the Coalition was cheated at the March 2nd 2020 elections. This is now history as there is an installed regime of the notorious PPP”.
According to the General Secretary, the party has faced its own share of internal problems since the last Congress.
She explained that “since our last congress and with a new executive the party faced numerous challenges. We have witnessed resignations of CEC (Central Executive) members, new appointments, and co-option of members of CEC. Despite those challenges, our party under the leadership of David Granger achieved quite a lot especially the 2018 – 2021”.
The General Secretary highlighted one of those achievements as the rehabilitation and construction of new party regional offices.
On the issue of party membership, she announced that the party currently has just over 12,000 active members and 320 party groups across the country.
She noted that the party’s membership list has to be updated moving forward.
Thanking the outgoing party leader David Granger for his service, Ms. Ally said granger promised and delivered on the good life to the party during the period 2015 to 2021.
“We thank him for his astute leadership and trust that come 2025 we will be back in the driving seat”, she stated.
On her own political life, Ms. Ally announced that today’s Congress was her final stint as General Secretary, noting that “the PNCR is the way to go. My dear comrades this is my final stint as General Secretary. I must tell you that the journey has been very challenging but I want to ask each member of our party to cleanse our hearts that condone hate; pray and let a breath of fresh air invade our minds and body. Our party groups must contribute to unifying our party and we must resolve to stay together, work together and build together”.
Although she is the current General Secretary, Ally was removed by the Central Executive Committee of the party from having any direct role in today’s elections. That decision was taken after she started to campaign for one of the candidates seeking the leadership of the party.
