A taxi driver and the passenger who brutally attacked and stabbed him are both hospitalised and nursing serious injuries. The incident took place just before 12 noon on Monday.
According to investigators, taxi driver Joel McCurdy was at his taxi base just outside Demico House, Stabroek when he was hired by the man to go to Parika. During the long journey, the passenger asked the driver to make a stop at Tushen on the East Bank of Essequibo.
The Police report stated that while the driver was traversing through the Tuschen area, the passenger whipped out a knife and began to stab him. He was stabbed to the chest.
A fight break out between the two men and the taxi driver was able to wrestle away the knife from the passenger and stab him about his body.
Passersby noticed the brawl in the car and were able to arrest the perpetrator. The driver was taken to the West Demerara Hospital while the attacking passenger was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital.
Both were admitted for medical care. Investigators believe that the man may have planned to rob the taxi driver but was not expecting him to put up a fight. A full investigation has been launched.
