Anna Regina Secondary and Queen’s College dominate top positions at CSEC

The traditional top schools have once again dominated this year’s CXC examinations at both the CSEC and CAPE levels.

According to the Ministry of Education, 65% of the students who wrote the CSEC exams gained Grade 1 to 3 passes.

This year’s top performing student hails from the Anna Regina Secondary School. He is Alex Muntaz, who secured 23 Grade One passes and 4 Grade two passes. There are three other students from the same school in the top 10, while Queen’s College also secured four places in the top 10 and the Saraswati Vidya Nikettan School securing two places in the top 10.

During the announcement of the results today, Education Minister, Priya Manickchand said that students are still reeling from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the achievements of all students should be celebrated.

“For me, the fact that you made it to form and wrote these exams when we just came out of a pandemic that saw millions of children across the world exiting high school prematurely, it means that you are already a winner. The government of Guyana is putting all kinds of measures in place to ensure that children who exit successfully and do well can move on to tertiary training and education in any field that you want. But we are also ensuring that we have in place for the children who did not exit successfully—all kinds of programmes that will ensure that this is not the end of your academic journey,” the Education Minister noted.

Minister Mancikchand said cognizant of the challenges facing the education sector, the Ministry has made several tangible interventions.

She believes many of those interventions are now paying off.

“If you did well, great job, congratulations, and if you did poorly, this is not the end of your academic journey if you don’t want it to be the end of your academic journey,” the Education Minister said.

She said the Government is moving ahead with its push to achieve Universal Secondary Education with the construction and expansion of new schools.

The Minister of Education believes that with a more comfortable learning environment, student will do better.
